THANKSGIVING HOME COOKING SAFETY TIPS
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it's time to prepare for a joyful gathering with family and friends. However, amidst the excitement of cooking delicious meals, it's crucial to prioritize safety to prevent accidents and ensure a happy holiday season. According to The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the leading cause of home fires. To ensure a safe and happy holiday season, here are some important reminders for you and your family:
1. Don’t overload power outlets: Overloading wall outlets or power strips, especially when using multiple kitchen appliances at once, is a recipe for electrical fire. The NFPA recommends using only one cord per receptacle outlet. Also, please look out for any frayed cords or bare wires that present a fire hazard.
2. Ensure smoke detectors are working: Check all smoke detectors and alarms, even those not near the kitchen. Test each device and replace the batteries when needed. By ensuring smoke detectors and alarms are working properly, any potential fire hazard can be caught before flames break out.
3. Don’t leave the kitchen unattended: According to the NFPA, unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and injuries. It's critical to never leave the kitchen while cooking. If cooking or baking something that takes a long time, make sure to stay in the home, use a timer and check on it frequently.
4. Keep objects away from hot surfaces: Keep easily flammable items like oven mitts, potholders, wooden utensils, hand towels, curtains, packaging, etc. away from the stove, oven, or any other hot surfaces. If using candles, please keep them away from flammable objects and never leave them unattended.
5. Have a fire extinguisher nearby: Ensure you have an in-date (not expired) fire extinguisher that's easily accessible in the kitchen or dining area. Please read the instructions on the label so you know how to use it should a fire occur.
